After conclusion of the recent hostilities in the Gaza Strip
, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East
(UNRWA) set up the UNRWA Gaza Emergency Operation to restore food distribution and medical services to the 219,000 UNRWA refugees. UNRWA had initiated and administered an education system for 40,000 refugee children. The UNRWA Gaza Emergency Team found most of the buildings intact, although the contents of many had been looted. The boys elementary school in Deir al-Balah refugee camp
was shattered by a bomb explosion.
