On 27 December 2008, Israeli forces began a wave of attacks on the Gaza Strip; a ground invasion began on 3 January 2009. This 22-day offensive, dubbed by Israel Operation Cast Lead, killed some 1,400 Palestinians, most of them civilians. Also killed were 13 Israelis, 4 of whom were soldiers killed by “friendly fire.”
