“To think of learning as a preparation for something beyond learning is a defeat of the process. The most important attitude that can be formed is that of desire to go on learning.” (Bell, 2015) In the medical billing and coding industry, those people are responsible for coding patients records and sending the bill to the insurance companies and making sure the codes for the patients are accurate as well as, keeping their information secure. Modifiers play a very important role in coding.
“A modifier is a code that provides the means by which the reporting physician can indicate that a service or procedure that has been performed has been altered by some specific circumstance but has not changed in its definition or code” (Gibson, 2012) Modifiers are a two digit code that modifies a procedure or service (modifier reference, n.d.) So when coding, if someone is having a procedure done on their liver they would code the process after the procedure is done and they might add the code -52 which means discounted or reduced service (carmay, 2018), the code, would be 47300-52 (Association, 2017). One wrong number in coding could mean a totally different procedure was done when it wasn’t.
If modifiers were not used insurances and doctors’ offices would have a harder time trying to bill the patient. Patient, doctor, and insurance bills would be high or low and codes would end up being wrong somewhere along the line. When you use a modifier it’s like putting gas in your car, like your car for it to run you need gas. When using a modifier, it most of the time, completes the code and helps you and the doctor better prepare for their next visit for whatever the circumstance may be. The goal of a modifier is to stay organized and precise.
Modifiers are important to the billing and coding process because without them it would be harder and more work to read the codes for the doctors and insurance people. The education of modifiers can limit and organize files and bills. For example, if someone were to code the removal of the gallbladder they would code the gallbladder but the modifier would be the removal process thus writing out or using a separate code for removal which might make the whole code incorrect or read incorrectly. Modifiers are important for education.
The medical field is always updating the codes and the different procedures for medical billing and coding that is always why when someone picks this field they must be willing to always learn and want to learn. Modifiers in this field help tremendously whether it’s the person coding it or the insurance provider receiving it and making sure patients are taken care of. Just two numbers can make a difference
