Urbanization
is taking place in an unprecedented speed and scale in developing countries due
to rapid population growth. Urbanization and climate change remain to be the
most two challenging trends to shape global development in the decades ahead.
Urban centres serve as hub of change, driving economic growth in most of the
developing countries. Due to rapid urbanization in developing countries mainly
Africa and Asia, energy consumption has increased in urban centres thus need
for more energy generation. Today, most of the economic growth occurs in urban
centres as cities typically concentrate the full spectrum of economic
opportunities that are not readily available in rural areas where even
electricity access is very low in some countries. According to a 2010 study
from the United Nations Human Settlements Program, the prosperity of nations is
proportionally linked to the growth of their urban centres. No single country
has ever achieved sustained economic growth or rapid social development without
urbanizing.

 

Urban centres
place substantially more pressure on natural resources than rural communities,
given their population density and the attendant demands on water,
agricultural, energy, and other resources. Energy generation remains to be one
of the largest contributors of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the world though it
remains to be the backbone of industrialization. It is for this reason that
Renewable Energy deployment has emerged as an essential energy policy component
for national, regional and local level governments to address the issue of
global warming through climate change adaptation and Greenhouse gas emission
reduction. Energy generation foe captive use, led by solar PV, has emerged as
an essential constituent of Renewable Energy policy responses (Ordóñez,
Jadraque, Alegre & Martinez, 2010). 
Being an emerging sector globally, there has been no enough attention
given to the quantification of the potential of rooftop solar PV, especially in
urban centres that contribute to much greenhouse gas emissions, where it is
expected to enjoy higher levels of market penetration. Present estimates of
rooftop solar PV potential are based on simplified extrapolations and opaque
assumptions, the foundations of which are not always transparent enough for
them to be of any use in policy development.

This study
sets out to close the information gap that exists in embedded solar PV
generation on rooftops, with an emphasis on generation potential assessment in
a large metropolitan city environment. A demarcated geographic area within the
inner city of Nairobi will be the focus of the study. This area includes the
City’s Central Business District (CBD) mainly for residential and hotel
industry and its surrounds focusing on industries in the manufacturing and
processing sector. An attempt will also be made to render the methodology and
approach to the study applicable and replicable in other similar areas, subject
to appropriate qualifications.
