X. The Oslo Process And The Establishment Of The Palestinian Authority
19 January 1993 to 28 September 2000
Following secret negotiations, the PLO and Israel sign a Declaration of Principles that ushers the start of further talks for interim arrangements during a five-year period and the determination of the final status of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. While a Palestinian Authority with proto-state institutions is established, Israel drags interim talks to partial results and final negotiations to failure; it consolidates its overall control over the Palestinian territories, which is met by ongoing Palestinian popular resistance.
